If you know someone with an adult dog who’s good with puppies, ask if you can get the dogs together at your home or theirs.

Three adorable, squeaky boba 'pearls' hide inside this Zippy Burrow Boba Milk Tea toy—and it's your pup's job to dig them out! Each win rewards your dog with satisfying squeaks that keep tails going. This interactive hide-and-seek toy from Zippy Paws serves up hours of fun, fighting boredom while firing your dog's natural hunting drive. Perfect for keeping curious pups mentally tested and happily busy. ($21, zippypaws.com)

If you can’t set up that kind of meet-and-greet, look for a puppy socialization class. Many modern trainers admit pups who’ve had a minimum number of shots—usually two or three rounds—because they grasp how vital early socialization is. Seek an organized, well-run class small enough for personal attention. If pups interact and play, make sure it’s not a free-for-all but careful pairings with close watch on body language and comfort.

The Dexas Snack & Distract Licking Mat kills anxiety by entertaining and distracting dogs. It's ideal for keeping nervy pups calm and busy during bathtime or other stress triggers. Just spread a treat on the soft, silicone bristles (peanut butter & yogurt are faves!) to keep your dog happy and occupied. ($10, amazon.com)

4.For Food-Motivated Dogs

If your dog's motto is 'will work for food,' the Zoomies Slow Feeder from Ollie B. Good is the perfect match. Its playful race-track design stops gulping and turns every meal into a rewarding puzzle.

5.For Dogs That Love to Fetch & Tug

There’s plenty more to do with young puppies—handling exercises, and work to prevent resource guarding. Stay tuned for articles on those topics, but for now, make socialization a priority.

How to train it

1

Add one small distraction at a time, and reward the brave choices.

2

Keep sessions short and always end on a success your dog is proud of.

3

Hold one treat at your dog's nose level and let the smell do the talking.

4

Say the cue once, clearly, in a happy voice - then wait.
